The Tenerife Carnival takes place in February mainly in Santa Cruz and is held in the weeks leading up to Lent. The party culminates in a parade through town when the ritual of the Burial of the Sardine takes place. For this tradition, a huge model sardine is carried through the streets followed by weeping mourners, and is eventually burned, marking the end of the festivities.
